Theresa Bernstein lived as a great  Urban Realist painter through the entire twentieth century. She was loosely affiliated with the Ashcan movement but was never fully embraced because she was a woman. She signed her paintings with her last name to sell more paintings. When people realized she was a woman, she was met with disbelief and disdain because of her "masculine brushstrokes" and bold pallate.
